Designing is storytelling. Designers are storytellers. A Persona is a character-building tool used to understand your audience(s) user profile.

Each persona should contains a description of a user’s demographic details (name, age, job, education level, where they live, be specific) and a creative back-story (like an actor would) that humanizes them and provides insight into their values, motivations, and desires. See examples I have brought in class. Finally, Create a tagline for their personality, ex. Sera “the liberal soccer mom, trapped in suburbia”. Whit, "the shy good ole' boy".

Set up Challenge #3

Homework:
Finalize both posters and print out fullsize and full-color (tiled is okay)

Homework: this is due on April 9th

Step 1
Choose an audience. Pick a classmate, relative, friend or parent and interview them. Ask them the question “If they could have any one thing, what would it be?” Chances are money or love or more time might come up...if it is a “big” answer like this then ask them follow up questions and see if you can get to the root. Use heuristics or a drill down exercise (why, so what, for what, how come, where etc). Document all answers.

Step 2
Using the interview to pin-point your perspective, observe a typical weekday in their life. Watch them during the week in order to observe a “normal” day. Document their day through note-taking and digital photography. Remember that “ethnography is observing people’s behavior in their own environments so you can get a holistic understanding of their world—one that you can intuit on a deeply personal level.” So document their environment too.

Step 3
Create a map that visualizes the problem space and communicates what you documented. Show relationships between the data and where your audience’s problem resides. See Nathan Shedroff’s reading on ways of organizing data.

Inclass:
Create solutions or opportunities through writing and sketching. Work fast and come up with many. This is divergent thinking. Sketch and write enough to get the “holes” filled in so you and the class can see “what if”. Make a rough proof of concept (written, sketched) something to make it real to your audience and test it with them. See what they think, would it meet their needs? why or why not. Your concept is not precious...let the audience beat it up and then refine.

Inclass Assignment on Monday: Answer the following:

1. where will it be given away, bought, sold, marketed?
2. what does it do, serve or why it is useful?
3. what is it competing against?
4. what should the package communicate? (to suggest....)
